One of a Kind Pendant
Greek coin from the 4th century BCE. Front: two young male heads facing forward with one inverted. Reverse: eagle grasping dolphin with talons. The ancient city of Istrus was situated in the delta of the River Danube and the Black Sea near present day Romania. Istrus and other major Black Sea coastal cities produced coinage with the motif of an eagle perched atop the back of a dolphin. The meaning of the two heads is not as clear. However, a frequent theory mentions the rising and setting sun and the possible inspiration of a total eclipse of the Sun which occurred in Istrus in 434 BC.
